Cool weather has settled in and the markets have been so pleasant. Many more market goers are venturing out to explore the offerings. The tone continues to be festive each week even as the season progresses and the days become shorted and cooler. There are only a few short weeks before the markets disperse and the farmers and artisans search for other venues in which to sell their wares.

The cool weather has certainly slowed down the tomatoes this year is many respects. We should continue to see excellent quality and quantity tomatoes throughout the remainder of the season. Gourds, marquis and mars grapes, fall squash, pumpkins, watermelon, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, early apples, beans, end of the season summer squash, variety of peppers. Alas the peach, soft fruit, and berries are done for the year. Hope you all had your fill of the aromatic sweet fleshy orbs that perfumed the market each week.

Need some ideas on what to do with your produce once you get home? Go to www.ellisvillefarmersmarket.com and check out the recipes from market volunteer Chef Cary McDowell. Cary shops the market then prepares a number of delicious made-in-the- moment dishes from the great array of products available at the market. I've compiled a rather lofty collection of his inspirations in order to share with you the ease of creating like inspirations in your kitchens. A few fresh vegetables, some herbs, and eggs and a fabulous frittata, fricassee or omelet awaits! Apples, cheese, nuts and greens and a nutritious salad is born!

Some new faces to the market in the upcoming weeks include a rustic furniture maker, goat milk soap artisan, ceramic artist, and a new grower that has unusual and diverse produce such as fresh pea shoots, Asian squash, Polish variety of tomatoes (big & fleshy like Romas), gourds and much more...

Many of the farmer's are planning their winter gardens- yes, things do grow in the winter. Hoops and plastic coverings can provide a greenhouse effect that can sustain lettuces, spinach, onions, carrots, chard, beets, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussel sprouts for starters. You can do this at home as well and harvest home grown edibles all year long!

Please come to the Ellisville Farmer's Market and support your local farmer's market and the farmer's and artisans that provide you with the local, fresh harvest that cannot compare!
